Gate Safety & Compliance in Marin County, CA
If you own a larger or automated gate in Marin, it likely needs to meet current safety standards, and in the Town of Tiburon it must be inspected and certified. Under Tiburon Ordinance 601 N.S., qualifying gates need a written safety certification from a qualified inspector, and automated gates must meet the UL 325 and ASTM F2200 standards, which require entrapment protection such as pedestrian photo eyes. Associated Electronics & Ironworks inspects, upgrades, and certifies gates across Marin.

Tiburon's Gate Safety Requirements
What the Town of Tiburon expects under Ordinance 601 N.S.
Larger gates must be certified, automated or manual.
The rules cover any gate intended for automation, plus any gate more than 48 inches wide or more than 84 inches tall. Qualifying manual gates are included, not only electric ones.
Existing gates were due by July 1, 2025, and must be re-certified every five years.
New gates must be certified at installation, then every five years. If your gate has never been certified, it is now past the Town's deadline.
Certification must come from a qualified inspector.
The Town accepts a written certification signed or stamped by a licensed fence installer, licensed automatic gate installer, ICC-certified building inspector, licensed architect, or licensed engineer, after an in-person inspection.
Automated gates must meet UL 325 and ASTM F2200.
These national safety standards require monitored entrapment-protection devices, such as photo eyes and safety edges, that stop or reverse the gate to prevent injury.
What are pedestrian photo eyes?
Photo eyes are safety sensors mounted on a gate that detect a person, pet, or vehicle in the gate's path and automatically stop or reverse the gate to prevent injury. They are the main entrapment-protection device required under the UL 325 standard for automatic gates, and the part most older gates in Marin are missing.

Tiburon Gate Owners: Are You Certified?
Tiburon's gate certification under Ordinance 601 N.S. is a standing requirement. Existing gates were due by July 1, 2025 and must be re-certified every five years, and it often comes up when you pull a building permit or sell your home. If your gate has not been certified, or is due for its five-year renewal, we can inspect it, add any required safety hardware, and provide the certification.
